The paper ‘Shaping tension structures with actively bent linear elements’ has been published in the International Journal of Space Structures, as part of the special issue on "Active bending", edited by Christoph Gengnagel and Olivier Baverel. This paper is a result of the ongoing collaboration between the BLOCK Research Group and professors Lars De Laet en Marijke Mollaert from the Faculty of Architectural Engineering, VUB, Belgium.

Matthias Rippmann has been invited by Prof. Oliver Tessmann to present his research at the BLOCK Research Group and professional work with ROK on November 26, 2013, as part of the Design & Research Lecture Series Fall 2013 at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. His talk is entitled "Form Finding to Fabrication - Geometric Approaches to Elegant and Efficient Architectural Design”.

Diederik Veenendaal will present his research at the BLOCK Research Group on flexible formworks at the Concrete Day in Rotterdam, Netherlands, organized by the Dutch Concrete Association, at 14.30, on November 21st, 2013. His talk entitled "Flexible moulds for liquid stone" will provide an overview of historical and current practice, as well as the HiLo project.

Matthias Rippmann will present his paper “Funicular Shell Design Exploration” at the ACADIA 2013 conference in Waterloo, Canada, Oct 24-26 2013, introducing to the digital design community the intuitive structural design approaches for funicular form finding of shells, and giving an overview of the projects and workshops realized. Matthias will also give a live demo of the new release of RhinoVAULT.

The BLOCK Research Group is happy to announce the release of RhinoVAULT v1.0, the TNA-based funicular form-finding plug-in for Rhinoceros®. The new, again free version comes with additional features and a much faster solver.

Two papers will be presented at the upcoming Symposium of the International Association of Spatial and Shell Structures (IASS)in Wroclaw, Poland, on Sept 23-27 2013: "Optimising Stone-Cutting Strategies for Freeform Masonry Vaults" and "Equilibrium of spatial networks using 3D reciprocal diagrams". Prof. Block has also been invited to chair a special session on “Graphic statics”.

MADA rib vault load test

The beautiful rib vault designed and built during the experimental design-make workshop with Prof. Block, James Bellamy, director of Re-vault, Tim Schork, lecturer at MADA, Damon Van Horne, Grimshaw Architects and architecture students from MADA, Melbourne Australia, will be load tested on August 28, 2013. RIP!
