Design-build vault wins two awards at AIA Student Awards

The ribbed tile vault, built by the student during the design-build Masterclass studio Prof. Block organized with Melonie Bayl-Smith and Dave Pigram at UTS Architecture in Sydney, Australia, has won two prizes at the 2013 Graduate & Student Awards of the AIA NSW CHAPTER: the Structural innovation in Architecture Prize, and a commendation for Digital innovation in Architecture, even though it was not submitted for this category.

Grimshaw is one of the sponsors of the MADA design-build workshop. The prototype is then also being built in the ground floor gallery space of their offices in Melbourne, Australia.

Design-build workshop at MADA, Melbourne, Australia

Invited by Tim Schork and John Sadar, Prof. Block will run a design-build workshop from May 27 to June 4, 2013 at Monash University Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture in Melbourne, Australia, based on RhinoVAULT and tile vaulting. The workshop will be co-run together with tile vaulting expert James Bellamy, who was leading the construction of the Pines Calyx masonry domes in Doover, England and the Mapungubwe Interpretive Centre soil vaults in South Africa.Read more

On Thursday May 17, 2013 from 15:00 to 17:30, there will be the final review, followed by a short award ceremony in HIL E 4. Matthias Rippmann has been invited by Prof. Marco Hemmerling to give a lecture and organize a workshop at Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe, University of Applied Sciences, Germany on May 14th, 2013. The workshop within the Master of Computational Design and Construction will focus on digital form-finding and fabrication strategies.

Prof. John Ochsendorf invited Prof. Block on May 1, 2013 to give a guest lecture in his “Structural Design†class for architecture and civil engineering students, the course for which Prof. Block was Prof. Ochsendorf’s teaching assistant for 5 years back in his days at MIT. The lecture “Stone Skins: New Masonry Shells†was opened up to the department.
