Urban Laboratory ETHiopia - SummerSchool 2010

Within the next 15 years, Ethiopia will be confronted with a population increase of an additional 45 million people. With the basic needs of food, water, and shelter presently unavailable for 1/10 of urban dwellers, innovative solutions are urgently needed for the construction of low-cost urban housing for the future. This Summer School project brought together interdisciplinary faculty members and students from ETH Zurich and EiABC, representing the disciplines of architecture and construction, water and sanitation, and entrepreneurship. Students were engaged in expert lectures, group seminars, hands-on workshops in appropriate building technologies, and practical case study/ design investigations. A full scale prototype for a sustainable, low-cost housing unit – the Sustainable Urban Dwelling Unit (SUDU) – was among the outcomes of the Summer School.More Info
