Lotte (Aldinger) Scheder-Bieschin is a structural engineer with a primary interest in the structural design and the formation of shell structures with informed fibre layouts and shapes by employing computational design.
She holds a master of science with distinction from the ITECH master programme at the University of Stuttgart. Within the program she structurally designed the ICD/ITKE Research Pavilion 2016/17. Her master's thesis focused on defining the underlying rules of the self-formation of membrane-actuated composite gridshells. This research was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Jan Knippers and Prof. Achim Menges.
After graduating she joined the Itke - Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design as a research associate. There she contributed to the structural design of two innovative lightweight timbre structures: the BUGA Wood Pavilion 2019 in Heilbronn and the Urbach Tower at the Remstal Gartenschau 2019, Germany.
In parallel she gained practical experience in the new engineering studio of Prof. Jan Knippers. As a project engineer she worked on lightweight timber plate structures, amongst others in collaboration with Behnisch Architects.
Lotte received one of ETH's Architecture & Technology PhD Fellowships and joined the Block Research Group in October 2019. Her work focuses on exploring the potentials of self-forming membrane gridshells.
