Minimum and maximum thrust in a masonry arch

Last modified on 30.08.2013

Category: Rigid block assemblies and Unreinforced masonry

Keywords:

Thrust line analysis is a method for the analysis and design of rigid block assemblies. Of an infinite number of possible stress states each represented by a line of thrust contained within the geometry of the arch, there are two extreme situations corresponding to the minimum and maximum horizontal thrust at the supports, represented by the deepest and the shallowest line that fits the section.
Use the handles at the bottom right to change the thickness and angle of embrace of the arch. Vary the thrust lines using the handles at the support and the apex.
