Form finding of Supersam

The concept of the roof structure is to eliminate horizontal forces by alternating tension cables and compression arches of similar curvature. The outward component of arch thrust balances the inward component of cable pull at each end.

Use the slider to follow the form finding process: 1-3) constructing the arches, based on the given horizontal force; 4-5) decomposing the reaction forces into vertical and horizontal components; 6-7) constructing the cable; 8-10) decomposing the reaction forces into vertical and horizontal components.
Note that the horizontal components of the reaction forces balance each other. Thus, only the vertical components have to be supported by columns.
Use the handles to change the geometry of the structure. Use the slider to change the size of the horizontal force and see what happens.
