This paper reports on recent developments for the computer-controlled fabrication of individual stone blocks of a freeform masonry vault in Austin, TX, USA. Based on structural requirements, state-of-the-art, 5-axis stone-cutting processes and software solutions used in the stone industry, new methods were developed to optimise the block geometry and machining strategies for this structure. A customised software program was written to simplify part preparation, reduce machining time and extend known fabrication procedures in a flexible and streamlined setup.
