Dr. Masoud Akbarzadeh

Masoud is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Technology in Architecture, ETH Zurich, where he is a research assistant in the Block Research Group. His main research topic is Three-Dimensional Geometrical Form Finding Methods.

Masoud has been educated both in Architectural design and Structural Engineering. He is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with two separate degrees in Architecture: a Master of Science in Architecture Studies, SMArchS Computation in 2012, and a Master of Architecture, MArch in 2011. He is also the recipient of the renowned SOM award for his design thesis in 2011. Prior to MIT, he received his Master of Science degree in Earthquake Engineering and Dynamics of Structures from the Iran University of Science and Technology in 2007 in continuation with his bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2004.

Masoud received one of the Architecture & Technology PhD Fellowships in 2012. In June 2016, Masoud defended his PhD dissertation, with William F. Baker, senior structural partner at SOM, as co-supervisor. He is now Assistant Professor of Architecture in Structures and Advanced Technologies at PennDesign in Philadelphia, PA, USA, where he founded the Polyhedral Structures Lab.
